It’s a proven fact that personalizing your workspace can make you 25% more efficient at your job. The reasoning?
It provides you with a sense of identity and gives you a little bit of control. It makes you happy.
While we can’t all have a ball pit at our cubicles, it’s easy enough to personalize your desk with some family pictures or a cute mug. But why stop there? I’ve found ten things to step up your office decor game to help brighten up your workspace and (hopefully) put a smile on your face!
1. Doodle Desk Calendar
You are going to have to plan meetings and important deadlines for the end of quarter report (even though you feel like you just finished last quarter’s report), so why not have a fun desk or wall calendar to track it all? The fun doodle calendar ($10) from Target shown above is a fun way to show some personality, but there are plenty of options to choose from.
2. Giraffe Office/Pencil Organizers
I’m sure we all know by now that I’m obsessed with giraffes (if not, now is as good a time as ever to give you a heads up on this). I have a cute little page from a magazine up on my wall that a lady in the office next to us chased me down to give to me. It sports several giraffes and some cute giraffe shoes. In any case, definitely show off your spirit animal by placing some cute office supplies like the office organizers up above ($13 & up) and add some personality to your space.
3. Floral Push Pins
Because, duh, they’re adorable. If that’s not a good enough reason to buy these push pins ($8), remember that it’s spring and we need to be embracing all the floral that we can before moving on to the next season.
4. Tree Post-It Notes
First of all, how can you not have a tree trunk post-it note set ($13)? Chances are, you’ll have a lot of post-it notes placed all over your desk. Why stare at boring yellow post-it notes when you can spice it up with some cutesy office supplies that actually make you want to look at all your old notes?
5. Magical Pens
Need some magic in the workplace? Grab some of these wand pens from Etsy ($5.53) and try not to cast any Unforgivable Curses on that one coworker that you can’t stand half of the time.
6. A Mythical Paperclip Holder
Maybe all that fun unicorn makeup is not perfect for your big presentation, but why not show off your love for this majestic creature by grabbing this super cute magnetic paperclip holder from Amazon ($12.75)? Just, please, make sure not to throw on some boring silver paperclips – make sure to grab the rainbow colored ones!
7. Doggy Mood Cards
Honestly, why aren’t these doggy mood cards ($10) at my desk yet? They’re absolutely hilarious and the dog-lover in me can’t help but squeal at each page.
8. This Red Office Space-themed Stapler
Okay, so I haven’t seen the movie yet (much to the chagrin of some of my coworkers), but this Office Space stapler ($25) seems to be an essential that needs to be on your desk.
9. A Flower Tape Dispenser
You thought there wouldn’t be any more florals, didn’t you? You were wrong – obvi. If you want to personalize your desk, you need to put some investment into the tape dispenser that you use and this flower tape dispenser ($11) is a good replacement for those plants that would probably die because you forgot to water them (guilty as charged).
10. Office Citation Note Pad
None of us are perfect. And sometimes, your coworkers need to know when you’ve spotted them committing a grave sin – such as Gary who decided to let their lunch turn into a miniature forest of mold and took the last fancy pen without telling the office manager. Shame on you, Gary. This office citation ($5) is for you.
Don’t be afraid to bring in some fun items to personalize your workspace and brighten things up a little! Your coworkers may feel a little hesitant themselves. Showing them that you can mix both work and fun (le gasp!) might help them get the courage to bring in a few items of their own.
Remember, you spend most of your week at work – it should be an environment that you enjoy. So make it into something that will bring a smile on your face and hopefully bring out that 25% more efficiency that will push you through to your presentation next week – or at least to Happy Hour at 5:30 PM on Friday.
